Comic-Con Wrap Up 2011

What an eventful Comic Con we had this year! Not only the Conan O'brien COCO MoCA event but hangin' with all the artists who, as my sis labeled them are "my extended art family." I finally painted that damn kilt I'd been procrastinating on for the past year or two, but who's counting? Haha, sorry for the slowness Mike! I got the chance to finally see my Megaman piece printed up in the new Megaman Tribute book by UDON, next to my homies Hainanu Saulque and Mike Henry amongst others!

Also it was Hilford McGilford's 1st CCI showing her artwork & it went extremely well for her. If I end up in the same spot at APE in SF this October, expect a more elaborate set up from Hilstrand & her big bro.

Special thanks to my crew, who traveled that long road trip yet again, Zee, Hil, and Crash. And many many thanks to Nu and Hoyt for sitting in with me & without me at the booth, the help was very much appreciated!

Will hopefully see everyone again in October for APE or November for CTN-X! That's it for now another CCI in the books!

Conan O'Brien Interviews Me at COCO MoCA!

Sounds absolutely absurd doesn't it?! But I was fortunate enough to get a chance to meet with my favorite late night talk show host Conan O'Brien this past week during Comic-Con in San Diego to talk about the Flaming C piece I created for this special COCO MoCA CCI event!

It's crazy how some things happen like this! If it weren't for my buddy Dudley Svendsgaard uploading my "Flaming C" piece to the team Coco fan site, all of this would probably never have happened. Back in March at Seattle during the Emerald City Con fellow artist Ryan Odagawa reminded me that I should send it in and I never got around to it, good thing there are more organized folks around me, I appreciate it guys!

Check out the actual interview which didn't make it to air, although me, my sister Hilary and pal Zan were right there in the opening chunk of footage on the show! But not to worry my sister Hilary taped the entire interview and you can watch it here!

Here is my latest entry into the PNG'z deviant art spot with my holme-skillets Junior Bruce and Hainanu Saulque! This month's theme was Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel's the Grinch. I drew this fella and Cindy Loo Who on Bart a few days ago and gave it the postcard treatment today for that ol' holiday type feel.

It was cool when I walked into the the house this afternoon it was just in time to catch the Chuck Jones classic animated version on Cartoon Network. I never noticed until watching today that a bunch of Seuss characters made cameos in the scene where the Grinch is having a bunch of wind up toys march into his satchel including my childhood fave, the fish from McElligot's Pool! Hope you enjoy and long live tha Great Dr. Seuss!!

Catching Coco In Burbank!

During the CTN Animation Expo me, my sis and my holme skillet Zee had a chance to catch the Conan O'Brien Show at the Warner Bros. lot! If I hadn't met Conan's graphic designer Pierre "Recliner of Rage" Bernard at Long Beach it would've never materialized, we can't thank you enough Pierre for hooking us up with such great seats, you are the man!

My buddy Dudley swore that he saw us in the replay of the show, and when I checked it out on the TBS web site, sure enough there we were! AWESOME experience! Viva Conando and thanks again to the one and only Pierre Bernard!

October to November Con Tour Wrap Up

I've been extra supa busy these last 2 months with work and the mini 3 con tour we just wrapped up starting in San Francisco at the Alternative Press Expo then onto the Long Beach Comic Con and finishing up last week in Burbank at the CTN Animation Expo. Whew! Just sayin' all that was a mouf-ful (*yes I pronounce everything aloud as I type it). I am proud to say that only 1 nerd exhibited at all 3 in such a short succession of months, yep yours truly! It was tiring but ridiculously fun, I will be doing 2 of the 3 next year and will most likely skip LBCC. Thanks to Hilford McGilford and my boys Nu and Zan for making the trips tha shiznit as always! This past Comic-Con was full off incredible super nerd moments from start to finish but by far the most insanely amazing of those moments came during the last hour of the convention on Sunday. While I was busy chatting it up with my buddy Zev and his wife, a guy approached the side of the table. He said in a very British accent that he was passing by and wanted to say how much he liked my take on the Watchmen. When I turned and looked at him I couldn't believe my eyeballs, it was none other than Dave Gibbons himself! In case you didn't know, Dave is a living legend and the artist who drew the greatest graphic novel of all time/ my personal favorite "The Watchmen"!

I actually turned to my sister and said "Do you know who this fn' is?!! It's fn' Dave Gibbons!!!" He laughed and took this picture with me totally geekin' out. He was the nicest guy you could ever want to meet. When I managed to slip him a copy of my new book he asked if my e-mail was in it so his lawyers could get in contact with me. This amazing moment made my C-Con the best yet! It was such a huge honor to have one of the guys whose work I've loved for years come by out of nowhere and tell me he liked my work! Comic-Con International This Week!

Me and my whole crew will be in the small press area at Comic-Con International 2010 in San Diego this week July 21-25th at the San Diego Convention Center! Yep itz tha big one again! So drop by and say "hi" if you are in the area. I will be selling copies of my brand spankin' new book on Saturday and Sunday and have a ton of new prints, original artwork and new sketch-cards available! My NEW Book: JUSSCOPE 2 In One!

My new book JUSSCOPE 2 IN ONE is done! I will have it available at Comic-Con starting on Friday. I would have gotten it sooner but it was delayed a few days due to technical difficulties, so instead it is literally hot off the presses! It will also be available in my web site store as well. It is an awesome book and I couldn't be happier, trust me you won't be dissappointed! 100 full color pages jam packed in a softcover book for only $20!!! WTF?!! Yeah! Only $20!!!

This 100 page monster of a book was a long time coming and boy am I glad it's finally finished! This fella represents work from various projects over the past 2 years that have been piling up here in my studio. I figured I better tie it all together now before the stack of drawings grows any larger and even more difficult to organize into book form. But this is more than just a regular ol' book! It's 2 books in 1! Hence the title "JUSSCOPE 2 in 1". Depending which way you flip it open you will get my gallery or my sketchbook, either way twice as much art as the my last pressing! 1st Annual Aftercon In SD!!

Back in April my buddy Rod Mojica told me about this awesome opportunity to pay tribute to the late great founder of Comic-Con Shel Dorf who passed away earlier this year. I was honored that I was asked and jumped on-board immediately!

Although the original piece I was to contribute got destroyed by a toothless white haired bridge troll (true story), I managed to pull things together and crank out a brand new piece featuring Dark Seid and Orion of Jack Kirby's New Gods. Wild Monkey Works, Skidone, and McGill's Skateshop present The First Annual AFTERCON 2010 An artshow to benefit The Shel Dorf New Talent Encouragement Fund July 22-24, from 8pm to midnight @ SUTURE GALLERY (5 blocks from the SD Convention Center) 655 10th Avenue, San Diego , CA 92101 (cross streets are 10th and G) Silent auction featuring original 2D and 3D art by over 70 professional artists and special live artists, skatedecks, and downtempo DJs. 21 and up.

Literary Icon Ray Bradbury, Godfather of the graphic novel Phil Yeh, MAD Magazine artist Hermann Mejia, The Simpsons character designer Phil Ortiz, Playboy cartoonist Dean Yeagle, plus many more!

Plus a Shel Dorf Gallery featuring photographs by Alan Light and art by Shel Dorf! Custom painted Vinyl Dolls presented by KidRobot! Custom painted skate decks presented by McGill's Skateshop!

Suture Galley is 5 blocks from the SD convention center and is 3000 square feet and is very well lit! The owners John and Drew are as stoked as all of us. They have a DJ booth and a small bar area in the corner. The music will be mellow and low volume so people can actually hear each other talk.

The Shel Dorf New Talent Encouragement Fund was established in November 2009 by Shel's brother Michael Dorf to provide financial assistance to selected high school and college students who have a passion to work in the comics and animation fields. These grants and scholarships aid in the purchase of art materials, DVDs, and literature to inspire students, as well as assist with their art education tuition. Shel was a mentor to many aspiring artists who later became professional artists. As a comics historian and writer, Shel helped elevate the perception of the comic and animation fields to their respected place within the arts, as well as creating what is now known as Comic-Con International. Shel helped build a strong community of creators who share his same passion for the arts and generosity towards young careers on the rise.
